Representative Maxine Waters Still Defiant After Judge Scolded Her

California Rep. Maxine Waters is still as defiant as ever, even after being taken to task by the judge in the Derek Chauvin murder case.

She appeared on CNN on Saturday with anchor Jim Acosta and took aim at the judge in the case, after she called on Black Lives Matter to be “more confrontational” if there was an acquittal.

On Friday, the night before she appeared with Acosta, she insisted that police “keep killing” black people as if there is some hunt going on and not that the people being shot were often criminals who fought police.

“If we take a knee, they’re mad. If we speak up like I do, they’re mad. If we protest like Martin Luther King Jr. taught us to do, they’re mad. What is it that they expect us to do when police keep killing us?” she said.

“I’ve talked with a lot of legal scholars and lawyers, and of course, he was way off track and he knows that in fact the jurors were not in the room. The jurors have been — had an oath not to look at television, not to read the newspapers, not to engage with people on this. And so he knows that there was no interference with the jurors,” Rep. Waters said of the judge to Acosta.

“But he was basically frustrated and angry, I believe. But I am very pleased there are those beginning to write about Judge Cahill’s basic comments. And one thing I read that came from someone from CNN was that the judge was all off track and he knows that this is not the cause of an appeal,” the 82-year-old Congresswoman said.

“Most of the time when you have a case like this they’re going to appeal it anyway, but to say that I’m going to cause an appeal really is not credible. And whether or not they have an appeal and even if they mention my name like the judge says, my comments, whatever, don’t matter anyway,” she said.

The comments Rep. Waters was referring to were those made when the defense in the Chauvin case made a motion for mistrial.

“An elected official, a United States congressperson, was making what I interpreted to be — what I think are reasonably interpreted to be — threats against the sanctity of the jury process,” Chauvin’ attorney, Eric J. Nelson, said.

Judge Peter A. Cahill absolutely scorched Rep. Waters in his response, in which he declined to declare a mistrial in the case.

“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” the judge said.

“I wish elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a manner that’s disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch and our function,” he said, adding that it is disrespectful the “coequal branches of government.”

“Their failure to do so is abhorrent,” he said.

His comments came on Monday, after the comments by Waters were heard at a protest for Floyd and for Daunte Wright, who was also killed in a confrontation with police.

“I hope that we’re going to get a verdict that says guilty guilty guilty,” she “And if we don’t, we cannot go away.”

She made it known that she was referring to a murder conviction and no less than that. When reporters asked what people should do if there was not a guilty verdict she said, “We’ve got to stay on the street. And we’ve got to get more active, we’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business.”

“There is strength in unity and America is a great example of it to the countries across the world. In the need of the hour, each patriot has sacrificed their needs to help out a fellow citizen.”
