Health Care Bill – Meghan McCain

Meghan McCain says there’s plenty of blame to go around for the collapse of the Republican-backed health care bill, from President Trump to House Speaker Paul Ryan to House Republicans to the House Freedom Caucus.

On “Outnumbered” today, McCain explained the American Health Care Act was a bad bill from the start, and lawmakers exacerbated its problems by rushing it and failing to to form a consensus.

She said it’s “deeply embarrassing” for Republicans that they have been unable to follow through on one of Trump’s signature campaign promises, despite holding the House, Senate and White House.

McCain said one of the biggest problems in this whole debacle has been the lack of compromise and negotiation, which she said was embodied by the Freedom Caucus’ unwavering opposition to the GOP health care bill.

“Ronald Reagan said, ‘As long as you agree with 80 percent, that’s good enough for me,'” McCain said. “We have to get to a place where we are compromising and negotiating.”

She added it was interesting that Trump’s anger over the failed bill seemed to be directed at the Freedom Caucus, as opposed to Ryan.

“Apparently, the art of the deal isn’t so good if you don’t know how Washington and legislation work.”
