Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been one of the most controversial state leaders in the past year. Specifically, he didn’t adopt the stricter, more draconian pandemic restrictions of other states.

While this has earned him many enemies on the left, right-wing voters and lawmakers continue to support DeSantis. And he’s gained so much support, he might even run for President in 2024.

Now, DeSantis has made another bold move — and many state residents are bound to appreciate it.

As the pandemic winds down, the lawsuits start piling up. We’re seeing lawsuits leveled against state leaders and health organizations in the wake of a hugely chaotic 2020.

But many of these lawsuits might be unnecessary, and could hurt some of the our most important residents. This is precisely what DeSantis wants to protect against.

That’s why he just signed SB 72, a new bill designed to push back against “frivolous” lawsuits, and there might be a lot of those in the coming months.

Gov. DeSantis doesn’t want some of the state’s most important groups and organizations negatively impacted, so he’s taking a proactive apprach.

Via Fox News:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill that aims to protect Florida businesses and health care centers from coronavirus-related lawsuits.

SB 72 specifies requirements for lawsuits alleging virus-related damages and will ‘deter unfounded lawsuits against individuals, businesses, health care providers, and other entities while allowing lawsuits deemed credible to proceed.’

DeSantis fans will undoubtedly back this move.

While he’s received plenty of criticism for how he’s handled the pandemic, he has also earned plenty of ardent followers. Many of these followers are business owners who appreciate their governor’s support.

DeSantis further added that this new legislation “protects the livelihoods of Floridians.”

That’s exactly what he’s been trying to do for the past year, and many state residents aren’t going to forget his efforts. And it’s clear the Governor continues to fight for their best interests.

The bill admits that some legal actions “may seem reasonable,” but it guards against “frivolous lawsuits” that will only drain money and time away from local businesses.

Unsurprisingly, Democrat lawmakers oppose the bill. They claim it denies court access to people who really were damaged by the pandemic.

But the legislation makes it plain that any lawsuit must prove “gross negligence” for it to move forward, and that seems fair enough to many Florida residents.

That’s really the word many Republicans and other Floridians use in regards to DeSantis: fair.

Key Takeaways:

  • DeSantis says the new legislation “protects the livelihoods of Floridians.”
