What’s Happening:

January 6 was a momentous day, one that secured the fate of our government—at least for the next two years.

Democrats will have a slim majority in the House and there will be a 50/50 split in the Senate (with Kamala Harris as VP, she can break tie votes).

Left-wing Democrats are already demanding a radical agenda, one that many states are sure to oppose.

Many have wondered if moderate Democrats (who supposedly still make up most of the party) would do in response to the left’s socialist goals.

While many of them have appeared to bow to the left, one West Virginia Democrat might draw a line in the sand.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) called on bipartisanship to prevail in American politics.

“Now, more than ever, we must enter a new era of bipartisanship in Washington,” the senator said in a statement. “With tight margins in the House and Senate, Democrats and Republicans are faced with a decision to either work together to put the priorities of our nation before partisan politics or double down on the dysfunctional tribalism.”

Joe Manchin is a Democrat from West Virginia, which is traditionally a very red state. Since 2016, he has (at least in word) voiced support for bipartisan cooperation.

Coming from such a red state, he is in a tough spot. If he goes whole hog on the left’s agenda, he might not have a job come 2022. He occasionally praised Trump for his accomplishments.

But still, he was compelled to vote with his party over the years. He even voted in favor of removing Trump during the impeachment fiasco.

With Democrats in a position of power in D.C., however, Manchin might have more flexibility. He can cast decisive votes in Senate, preventing a tie that would be broken by Kamala Harris.

That might, might, force cooperation between the parties. Manchin is saying as much in his recent statement.

But the weight of the Democratic Party might pose too heavy for this one man. Unless more moderate Democrats join him, he might not be able to turn the tide.

It will come down to what he values more: support from his red state or the party at large?
