Though many claim mail-in voting is a legitimate option for elections, questions linger about the reliability of the process. Absentee ballots have caused problems in the past.

The Trump administration remains skeptical about the prospect of universal mail-in voting for the November elections, and Republicans say absentee balloting paves the way to fraud.[contentad widget=”427100″]

Perhaps the GOP is right, at least in certain circumstances.

Just ask Wayne County, Michigan: they’re asking the Secretary of State to intervene after “chaos” counting absentee ballots during election night.

According to the Detroit News (via Breitbart), the recent primary election has a very big problem — the ballot counts don’t even come close to matching the number of ballots cast.

The numbers are definitely concerning:

Recorded ballot counts in 72% of Detroit’s absentee voting precincts didn’t match the number of ballots cast, spurring officials in Michigan’s largest county to ask the state to investigate ahead of a pivotal presidential election.

Furthermore, officials say 46 percent of all precinct numbers were off. And if the poll books can’t match the ballots cast, those precincts can’t be counted in the election.

This is why the Wayne County Board of Canvassers wants Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to examine the “training and processes” surrounding the August 4 primary.

They call it a “perfect storm” of challenges.

And those challenges have resulted in election results that aren’t merely a little inaccurate, but “so inaccurate we can’t even attempt to make it right.”

Data presented to the board said 81 precincts, including 73 absentee voter precincts, were +/- 5 votes ‘without explanation.’

One representative said several counting tables at the polls “had opened ballots with no poll book” to see if the individual was authorized to vote.

The bottom line is that canvassers apparently can’t rely on the results, and the entire process needs to be examined.

If this is indicative of the potential problems caused by absentee/mail-in voting, it could be a serious concern for the presidential election.

After all, 1.6 million Michigan residents cast absentee ballots for state elections in August. And of course, that number should be much higher for November.

If we do absentee balloting on a mass scale, will election officials be able to keep up? Will the process be 100% legitimate and reliable?

Maybe that remains to be seen.

Key Takeaways:

  • In a Detroit primary election, absentee balloting caused serious counting problems.
  • 72 percent of absentee voting precincts didn’t match the number of ballots cast, and 46 percent of all numbers were off.
  • The election Canvassers are asking Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to examine the “training and processes” in the Aug. 4 primary.
