Blue State Swamped By A Mass Exodus – They Just Lost 15% Of Their Entire Police Force In New York

As criticism of law enforcement mounts, police face new problems. Maybe the biggest problem they’ve encountered recently is the fresh surge of officers who are quitting or retiring.

At the same time, fewer people seem willing to join the force. And of course, this creates a serious issue for public safety — and it might be a lot more serious in one Democrat stronghold.

That’s because they’ve now lost a whopping 15 percent of its entire police force.

Being a police officer isn’t easy, even in the best of times. But with so many leftists coming down hard on law enforcement and fresh calls to “defund the police,” it’s now a very tough environment.

So tough, in fact, that a whole lot of officers are disappearing from the ranks.

And given the surges in crime that we’ve seen cropping up all over the country, we really can’t afford to lose so many good law enforcement members.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening in the state of New York. And it’s happening at a disturbing rate.

The members of the NYPD grew so disenchanted with their jobs in 2020 that over 5,300 uniformed officers either retired or quit, an astonishing 75% increase over the year before, amounting to 15% of the total number of officers on the force.

The impetus for the officers quitting seemed to be the death of George Floyd and the unrest that followed; between May 25 and June 24, 2020, a whopping 272 officers left the force in one month.

The concerning statistics come courtesy of a New York Post report, and it’s cause for immediate concern.

In 2019, 1,509 officers quit and 1,544 filed for retirement. But in 2020, those numbers exploded: 2,746 retired and 5,346 quit. And so far this year, over 830 more have walked away.

Former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik spoke out against recent police reform bills, such as one proposed change that would give citizens the chance to sue officers for excessive force or unlawful searches.

He added:

No police officer should work in a jurisdiction where they do not have the support of those they work for.

Beginning today, I will no longer recommend young people consider the NYPD as a career.

And other police officials aren’t afraid to speak out, either.

They say the city has treated them poorly for a while and the situation has only gotten worse. In fact, they’re accusing politicians of basically gimping their ability to do their jobs.

Here’s what Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch told the Post:

The Mayor and City Council are absolutely trying to abolish the police. They’ve kept our pay absurdly low. They’ve ratcheted up our exposure to lawsuits.

They’ve demonized us at every opportunity. And they’ve taken away the tools we need to do the job we all signed up for, which is to keep our communities safe.

Lynch finished by saying that City Hall should just “admit the truth,” that they’re going for “abolition-through-attrition.”

And at the end of the day, a whole lot of officers are simply saying they’ve had enough. They won’t stand for this anymore and many are saying, “this isn’t the job I signed up for.”

Right now, things are looking dark in New York.

If they’re losing this many law enforcement personnel, and the anti-police rhetoric continues to hold sway in D.C. and the media, NY citizens could be in for a very rough time.

And they have a right to be safe in their own community — which only happens with a proper police presence.
