In less than 48 hours, Congress will meet to certify the Electoral College votes from the 2020 presidential election. Most politicians and journalists believe it’s a cut-and-dry situation.
But that won’t stop Republicans from objecting. Texas Senator Ted Cruz is leading the charge against certification, as they believe the “disputed states” need to be revisited.
And 10 GOP members have jumped in and decided to stand by Cruz.
They plan to seriously challenge the certification before it goes official, as they contend there are voting irregularities that must be examined. To Republicans, it’s a matter of election integrity.
President Donald Trump undoubtedly agrees as he continues to contest the results.
In a statement co-signed by Cruz and the 10 GOP members, they specifically ask for an audit of states where the vote was especially close.

Congress should immediately appoint an Electoral Commission, with full investigatory and fact-finding authority, to conduct an emergency 10-day audit of the election returns in the disputed states.
Once completed, individual states would evaluate the Commission’s findings and could convene a special legislative session to certify a change in their vote, if needed.
Here’s their plan: they intend to vote on January 6 “to reject the electors from disputed states as not ‘regularly given’ and ‘lawfully certified.’”
Unless they get that 10-day emergency audit, they’re going to stand against the certification.
Here are the Republicans who have chosen to side with Cruz on the issue:
Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn and Indiana Sen. Mike Braun.
Then there are four Republican senators-elect: Wyoming’s Cynthia Lummis, Kansas’s Roger Marshall, Tennessee’s Bill Haggerty and Alabama’s Tommy Tuberville.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley recently announced he’d object as well. This means the GOP will have at least a dozen members who are willing to stand against the current Electoral College vote count.
However, it’s definitely an uphill battle.
To overturn Joe Biden’s victory, a majority of both chambers must agree to it. That’s obviously unlikely, especially because Democrats control the House Of Representatives.
Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have spoken out against the move, so the GOP doesn’t appear to be in the best position heading into Jan. 6.
But again, that clearly won’t stop this small band of Republican politicians from rising up.
